Fishing gear must be durable. But should it remain durable for decades if it is accidentally lost at sea?

That contradiction presents a major materials challenge.
Norner's expert team, led by Ravindra Choweddy, together with Ole Jan Myhre and Vinh Duy Cao, has been exploring how polymer science can enable fishing gear that delivers the required performance in use while reducing its long-term impact if lost in the marine environment.
Ravindra Chowreddy and his team recently published their latest scientific contribution in Polymer. The research investigates biodegradable polyester blend candidates for fishing gear applications:

It is not about suggesting that biodegradable materials alone can solve marine litter. Prevention, responsible use, retrieval and waste management remain essential.
Rather, the question is: Can we add another layer of protection through better material design?
Finding that balance requires understanding processing, mechanical performance, polymer formulation and biodegradation, and translating laboratory science into materials capable of meeting real-world demands.
That is exactly the kind of challenge where we at Norner want our polymer expertise to make a difference.
